Celebrating InCommunity’s EmployABILITY Stars During NDEAM

At InCommunity, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to explore their interests, develop their skills, and pursue meaningful employment. Through our EmployABILITY Supported Employment program, individuals receive personalized assistance to identify their strengths, find jobs that align with their goals, and build lasting relationships with employers. Support continues beyond the hiring process, helping individuals succeed and grow in their workplaces.

This National Disability Employment Awareness month, we’re proud to spotlight four individuals whose employment journeys demonstrate what can happen when determination, opportunity, and support come together: Shane S., Marshall P., Brian A., and Amy P.

Shane S.: Taking the Next Step

Shane has been a longtime employee of Publix, where he has built a reputation for hard work, reliability, and a positive attitude. While working as a bagger, Shane expressed his interest in working the register and taking on additional responsibilities.

His dedication helped open the door to a new opportunity. During August, Shane worked as a front desk clerk twice, giving him the chance to explore a different role and see his interests recognized.

Although he continues working as a bagger, the experience was meaningful because Shane knew his voice had been heard and his goal had been acknowledged.

“I am so proud of Shane and all that he has achieved!” shared Marie Remy, Shane’s Employment Specialist.

Shane’s experience is a reminder that career growth can take many forms. Listening to employees, recognizing their aspirations, and providing opportunities to develop new skills can make a lasting difference.

Marshall P.: Finding Belonging at Work

For the past two years, Marshall has been part of the team at a local cafe. His journey represents perseverance, personal growth, and the power of an employer who believes in an individual’s potential.

After experiencing challenges maintaining consistent employment in the past, Marshall is now thriving in his current role. His employer and coworkers have embraced him as part of their work family, creating an environment where he is valued and included.

That sense of belonging extends beyond his regular shifts. When the company caters events or participates in special activities, the team makes sure Marshall can join them, even arranging transportation when needed.

As the business explores expanding to a larger location, its owners are considering locations nearby to help Marshall transition smoothly.

Marshall’s success reflects the collaborative effort between Marshall, his employer, and his Employment Specialist, Ariana Gray. Together, they have helped create the conditions for him to thrive.

His story shows that inclusive employment is about more than securing a job. It is also about building relationships, fostering belonging, and creating opportunities for long-term success.

Brian A.: Nineteen Years of Dedication

Brian has been a valued member of the Kroger team for 19 years, working as a bagger and front-end support associate. Throughout his tenure, he has navigated health challenges while remaining committed to his employment.

His longevity is a testament to his dedication, the support he receives, and a workplace that recognizes the value he brings.

Brian’s front-end supervisor, Mrs. Dassy, shared her appreciation for him, saying, “Brian’s one of the family, we take good care of him, and all of our customers just love em.”

That sense of connection speaks volumes about the relationships Brian has built over nearly two decades. With a strong support system and consistent workdays and hours, he has continued to be an important part of the Kroger team.

Marlayne Merrell-English, InCommunity’s EmployABILITY Manager, is proud to advocate for and support Brian throughout his employment journey.

Brian’s story highlights how supportive employers and reliable workplace relationships can help individuals maintain meaningful employment over time, even when challenges arise.

Amy P.: Celebrating More Than 30 Years of Workplace Success

This year, we’re also celebrating Amy P., who recently retired from Publix after more than 30 years of service.

Amy’s decades-long employment journey is an incredible milestone and a testament to the value of commitment, opportunity, and continued contribution in the workplace.

At InCommunity’s 2026 Golden Goals Awards luncheon, Amy was honored with the Workplace Success Award, recognizing her outstanding employment achievement. Her retirement marks the close of a remarkable chapter and an opportunity to celebrate the years of dedication she brought to her work.

Amy’s accomplishment is an inspiring example of what meaningful employment can look like over a lifetime. We congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition and wish her the very best as she begins her next chapter.

Building More Inclusive Workplaces, Together

Shane, Marshall, Brian, and Amy each have a unique story, but their experiences share an important message: individuals with disabilities bring valuable skills, dedication, and contributions to the workplace.

Their achievements also highlight the important role employers, coworkers, employment specialists, and job coaches play in creating environments where individuals can pursue their goals and thrive.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month reminds us that inclusion is more than opening the door to employment. It means listening to individuals, recognizing their abilities, providing opportunities for growth, and creating workplaces where everyone has the chance to belong.

At InCommunity, our EmployABILITY Supported Employment program is proud to support individuals as they pursue meaningful work and build successful employment journeys.

Join us in celebrating Shane, Marshall, Brian, Amy, and all the individuals whose talents and determination make our workplaces and communities stronger.
