Celebrating Value and Talent: National Disability Employment Awareness Month at InCommunity

Every October, we join organizations across the country in recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) - a time to honor the contributions of workers with disabilities and recommit to building inclusive, accessible workplaces.

This year’s theme - “Celebrating Value and Talent” - reminds us of a simple truth: people with disabilities are not defined by limitations, but by the strengths, skills, and perspectives they bring to the workforce. At InCommunity, we see that value every day.

Employment Is More Than a Job

For people with disabilities, employment is about more than just a paycheck. It’s about:

  • Purpose - doing work that matters.

  • Pride - being seen for what you can do, not what others assume you can’t.

  • Independence - having the freedom to build your own life.

But despite decades of progress, barriers remain. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in 2023 only 22.5% of people with disabilities were employed, compared to 65.8% of those without disabilities - a gap that reflects persistent systemic barriers.¹

We believe that must change.

Our Commitment at InCommunity

At InCommunity, inclusion isn’t a buzzword. It’s a foundation. We believe that:

  • Talent is everywhere, but opportunity must be intentional.

  • Inclusion doesn’t stop at hiring - it requires culture, coaching, and real support.

  • People with disabilities deserve more than access - they deserve to belong, grow, and lead.

That’s why we’re proud to offer inclusive employment opportunities within our own organization, where team members of all abilities are supported, empowered, and valued. We don’t just talk about inclusion - we live it.

And our commitment extends beyond our walls. We also support the broader employment journeys of the people we serve - helping individuals explore careers, build skills, and achieve their personal employment goals through our Supported Employment program.

Our name says it all: InCommunity. That’s where we show up, and that’s where our impact begins. We’re not only committed to inclusive hiring - we’re also deeply engaged in helping others build inclusive futures.

Whether it’s:

  • Partnering with employers and advocates

  • Supporting self-advocates in finding meaningful work

  • Or mentoring the next generation of disability leaders

InCommunity stands for equity, dignity, and possibility - in the workplace and beyond.

This Month, Let’s Celebrate What’s Possible

Let’s use National Disability Employment Awareness Month to shift the conversation. Let’s move from charity to capability, from barriers to bridges, and from assumptions to opportunities.
